The candid advice of a mother, hardened by the harsh realities of a world without sympathy.

Perfect
Music & Lyrics by Ophelia Baptista
Arrangement by The Gin Rebellion
“Perfect”, my mother said
When I was a child right before bed.
“Perfect, why would you want to be?
In a world that’s full of grief and hate?
No, it’s better to anticipate
And listen to what I’d wish someone told me!”
She said: “When you get older
The world will be your oyster
The streets are paved with dreams and you will find
That if you are good and do just as you should
There is no doubt that you will lose your mind.
Now I know that you may think
That life’s a funny thing
And exceptions do often pass the line.
But the rules are for fools when it comes to get the jewels,
And my dear, you will simply waste your time!
The charms of the world may offer you its bliss
But beware any man who offers you a kiss
Just take what you can and leave them all behind.
And believe me, my dear, if you do not to me heed
And offer your heart whene’er you feel the need,
Don’t come crying to me when he off and robs you blind!
You will see, my child,
That no person can be perfect
There are tramps and thieves from every walk of life.
Some say they are good and do what they think they should,
But every day they’re fooled by their own lies!
And I know that you might say not everyone’s that way,
That saints among the sinners do reside
Try to prove me wrong. They don’t last that way for long,
And your choice is to join with them or die.
Virtue is often absent
From the minds of great and immortal men.
Naysayers only aim to deceive.
The young always protest the truth,
But someday, someone will break you,
And you’ll wake up to reality!
And on that day, it’ll be perfect.
It’ll be perfect!
An unfettered heart’s the way, the only key.
You’re a pawn all the same, unless you play the game
And do not stop until you’ve killed the Queen!
And then my child, you will see the opportunity
That lies in all the clever and naive,
And exploit all you can, for that is the way of man:
The rich, the poor, and all the bourgeoisie!
