about

A letter from a heart that has been broken and hardened by a lost love.

lyrics

A Letter To Mr. Mulbain
Music & Lyrics by Ophelia Baptista
Arrangement by The Gin Rebellion

Good sir, do not read me wrong.
Your proposal’s sincere,
Though it’s just a bit strong.
No doubt you have made yourself clear,
But a heart cannot love when it’s given in fear.

And no doubt, I’ve heard it before.
Your words echo of one
Whom I cared and adored.
And just like him you’ve offered your vow,
But the bruises have healed and I know better now.

I wrapped myself
‘Round his finger
And he promised me the world, but did he deliver?
And I had quite enough
Growing older while waiting
For him to grow up.

Kind sir, forgive me, it’s true.
A battered suit of armor
Stands before you.
I am protected and hindered by doubt
As it stands it’s unlikely I’ll ever come out.

So go ahead and praise my design.
Go and wait by the gate
And hope I will resign.
Four long years, I’m sure you may feel
Are enough to recoup from that painful ordeal.

But you see I
Am contented
To lock my heart up in a jar and protect it.
And who knows how long it will take?
Though I know it may shrivel
At least it won’t break.

To me, sir, love is like a cage:
Forged with good intentions
Until it’s engaged.
The ring shackles a woman to losing
Her name, her fortune, and her will to choose!

I’m not willing,
I’m not ready
And this back and forth longing
Makes me unsteady.
So don’t tell me what I should do
When you cannot prove
Your words will remain true!

I only answer
To my whims
Do not try to persuade me. It’s useless!
So my friend, I must bid you adieu
So that with this final word may I be
Signed, sealed, and delivered
From you.
